Hi Murali Sir,
I recently saw a  Krishi darshan program on Asianet TV Channel which explained the business of rearing cows for milk and milk products. And searching google for more information on this business, I came across this website and your post.

How much does it cost (investment) to start such a business ? And how many cows are needed (minimum) for this business to start making money ? Can I start such a business with just one cow ? What are the prerequisites - such as land, etc.

Your answer is much appreciated. :-)

Thanks
Prakash

srivinayakatvm:
Dear Mr.Prakash,

Now a days a good cow costs Rs.40000 to 50000/- in dharmapuri/krishnagiri area. Ideally 10 cows is better in terms of returns on income. Even 5 can be worked. There is not much of investment for milking machine or chaff cutter used for 5 cows & 10 cows.Machine which can milk 1 cow can also milk 10 in one hour. The cost of adding 5 more cows plus the housing costs extra.Better to use cow mats enabling you to get more milk. 1 cow not at all advisable. For fodder cultivation 1 acre is enough for 10 cows. Last week in DD4 Malayalam Channel they were showing Mr.Hamaad,Ksheeradhara award winner for the best dairy farmer in Varkala,Trivandrum district.
